Like Eric Bogle, John Schumann is one of the great Australian folk singer/songwriters. He rose to national fame in the late 1970s, fronting the band Redgum, with original songs that made full use of his barbed wit and fiery left-wing politics. His classic 1983 anthem, “I Was Only 19,” sensitized the whole country to the fate of Vietnam War veterans, whom public opinion had widely treated as pariahs. Despite the more jaded environment of today’s generation, Schumann continues to tour around the country for his loyal fans, singing his new and old material– some of which has already become an integral part of Australia’s literary culture.
